Located just inside the former city walls on the eastern side of Hameln is the Rat Catcher’s House, or Rattenfängerhaus. It dates from the early 17th century, and was occupied by a local councillor. It is a wonderful building with a fancy and ornate façade unlike any other in the city. The name of the house comes from an inscription about the legend of the Pied Piper which was ones on the exterior. The building is used as a restaurant, so diners can also see the interior.
