The Altes Schloss (Old Castle) in Giessen was built around 1300 to help fortify the town. It was later extended slightly. It remained in regular use for many years, and in the 19th century it was used for housing. In recent years the building has been partially restored, since air raids in 1944 saw it partially destroyed. Today it houses the Oberhessisches Museum, with collections of art from the Gothic period to the present. It is open most days.
