The Museum of Hamburg is situated in a grand brick building with a tower on its roof that was used as a lighthouse. The building dates from 1922, when the museum was opened. It was built on the site of a former fortress named Bastion Henricus which dated from 1625. Inside the museum visitors can see many valuable items from Hamburg’s history, much of which was saved when other buildings were demolished. The collection covers all important aspects of the city, including harbour and shipping, as well as cultural and social history. A new exhibition pays tribute to Jewish life in Hamburg.
