Hamburg’s Museum of Ethnology is one of the largest museums of its kind in Europe. It is located close to the popular Aussenalster lake. Because of the city’s long-serving history of maritime trade, the museum plays on this by showing exhibitions from Africa, the Americas, Russia and the South Pacific. It opened in 1879, and has recently been undergoing a vast renovation project to bring the exhibits up-to-date. There are 350,000 artefacts in its possession, and 400,000 photographs, so you can be sure of a thorough display upon your visit.
