The Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt is located just behind Römerberg square, next to the Dom Cathedral. Schirn is the name for an open-air market, which this site used to be known for before it was devastated in World War 2. This is the premier exhibition building for art in Frankfurt, and one of the most prestigious in Europe. The modern building was opened in 1986 alongside some uncovered remains of the Roman city’s foundations, and often combines its exhibitions with an archaeological theme, as well as showing works by old masters and many modern-day contemporary artists. Its exhibitions are always temporary.
