Katharinenkirche (St. Katharine’s Church) is a Baroque building located just off the Hauptwache in the centre of Frankfurt’s shopping district. Today it is a Protestant church, however it was built on the site of a Catholic church of the same name which was demolished in 1677. It has an ornamental tower with a lantern on the top, and a beamed hall. The Goethe family worshipped here, and Johann was known to spend time in the church’s library reading Greek philosophy. After bombing in World War 2, the church was rebuilt and simplified. Concerts are held here, often using the 4,400 pipe organ.
