Hohenburg Castle is a large ruinous structure on a hill overlooking the town of Homburg. This was a 12th century fortress, and seat of the counts of Homburg. The counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken took over in the 16th century, rebuilding the castle as a Renaissance palace. Then, under the rule of French king Ludwig XIV, extra emphasis on fortification was added to the site. Between 1694 and 1717 the fortress was largely destroyed and left in a ruinous state. The castle has been partially restored and opened to the public since 1980.
