Güstrow Dom was not actually built as a cathedral, as the name suggests. It started life as a collegiate foundation, and then became the court chapel. Looking at it today, you would also be forgiven for assuming it was rather unremarkable. Inside, however, is a different story. The building features a gilded high altar from the 15th century, by Hinrik Bornemann. There are also a set of carved apostles on the pillars of the nave. Also look out for the Renaissance funerary monuments in the choir, and the three sculptures added in the 20th century by Barlach.
