One of the main recreational attractions in Essen is the Gruga Park, located to the south of the city centre. This open air part of the city stretches a long way, with forested areas and the Baldeneysee reservoir nearby. Inside the park, which has lots of open areas for walking and relaxing, is also the city’s Botanical Gardens. There are also playground areas for the kids. The park is only open from April until September.
