Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born in Frankfurt-am-Main on 28th August 1749 at his family home on Großer Hirschgraben in the city centre. Goethe went on to become Germany’s most famous poet, novelist and playwright who is still well-read today. He lived in this house unti l177, when he moved to Weimar. Sadly much of the building was destroyed in World War 2, however it has been restored and reconstructed as it was during Goethe’s life. Inside, and in the adjoining museum, visitors will find his original writing desk, period rooms and a collection of items related to him.
