The Jazzkeller is a Frankfurt institution. Located in an old brick-walled basement under the modern buildings of Kleine Bockenheimerstrasse, it was opened in 1952 and quickly became synonymous with the best in Jazz performances, gaining a worldwide reputation. Greats who have played here include Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Chet Baker. The club is known for its intimate atmosphere, with the stage, bar and seating area all occupying a small space. Many performers treat it as an informal gig, joining the audience for drinks. The club is open five nights a week, with Jazz acts on at least three.
