The Speicherstadt is a self-contained city of warehouses in Hamburg’s vast harbour. It was built between 1885 and 1910, with many different red-brick buildings designed to house goods for years at a time tax-free. The complex has its own streets and traditional cranes. The Speicherstadtmuseum, or Dockland Museum is located at the complex and gives an overview of the history of the place and its unique businesses and trading past. It has special exhibitions on topics such as coffee and tea trading.
