The large white cylindrical tower in central Görlitz is known as the Dicker Turm. It is also known as the “Thick Tower” locally. Standing 45 metres high, at its peak is a Renaissance cupola, giving it the appearance of a lighthouse. The other notable feature is the sandstone relief on the side of the building, representing a coat of arms and two figures. This was added to the building after being moved from one of the city gates. The tower dates from the 14th century and served a military purpose.
