Giessen’s Botanical Gardens are run by the town’s university. They were founded in 1609, when the old palace garden was donated by Ludwig V of Hessen. This makes it Germany’s oldest botanical gardens. Its original remit was the scientific research of plants and herbs. It is still used for this purpose today, however visitors can now enter and look around the many species and specimens on display. It is open most days for a small entrance fee.
