The Basilica of St. Ludgerus was founded on this site in Werden in 796 by Luidger himself. It later became the royal abbey church of Werden in 1256 and the burial place of St. Luidger. It is one of the last great Romanesque basilicas to be built in the Rhineland and has an impressive exterior which is specially lit at night. The church has a treasure chamber attached, with many precious religious items on display, including chalices, crucifixes and a 5th century pyx. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
