The Altona district of Hamburg was incorporated into the city in 1937. Although partially industrial, with its fish-processing plants along the river, the district is also full of grand villas and mansions from the 19th century, set along wide boulevards. Altona started life as a Danish settlement, and grew into an independent centre which had its own sea-going trade. The Altonaer Museum can be found in the district. It tells the story of this old settlement from earliest times. It also covers its maritime history.
