The Alter Elbtunnel in Hamburg is an ingenious method of transporting people and vehicles across the River Elbe. It was built in 1911 and uses four large elevators inside the dome buildings to take travel down to the tunnel which is 24 metres below the river. The tunnel never closes to pedestrians, who can cross free of charge.
