The old Alte Synagogue in Essen is a large place of worship for the Jewish community in the city. It was opened in 1913, built by Edmund Körner, with a large dome atop that can be seen a long way off. The synagogue was burnt out by the Nazis in 1938, but otherwise survived the war and was fully restored. It has seating for 1,400 people, and is today largely a place of remembrance for the tragedies of World War 2’s Jews, with various changing exhibitions on show.
