Unter den Linden is the principal avenue running through the centre of Berlin. It is the centre of cultural and political life in the city and close to many of the sights and shopping areas in the centre. It has a grassed, tree-lined central strip between the two roads, from which it gains its name (Linden, or lime tree). The avenue runs from the Brandenburg Gate at one end, to the site of the former Berliner Stadtschloss. The shopping street of Friedrichstrasse crosses Unter den Linden. Important buildings along the street include the Hotel Adlon, Russian Embassy, Berlin State Library, Berlin State Opera, St. Hedwig’s Catholic Cathedral, and the Neue Wache war memorial, amongst others.
