The State Library, or Staatsbibliothek in Berlin was designed by Hans Scharoun and opened in 1978 close to the Kulturforum. It is associated with the Royal Library on Unter den Linded. Inside it is full of reading room and emanates peace and quiet. Its collections are extensive, with 10 million books, 2.3 million microfiches, and 13.5 million pictures in its archive. Its most treasured possessions are a copy of the original Gutenberg Bible and a handwritten Coptic codex of the Book of Proverbs. It also has the oldest 8th century Buddhist text, and original copies of musical works by Bach and Beethoven.
