St. Nikolaus Hospital was founded in Bernkastel Kues in the 15th century by Nikolaus Cusanus, who went on to become a prominent vicar-general in Rome. It is often referred to as the Cusanus. It was founded to house 33 destitute and needy old men, and houses a lovely chapel from the same period, with a Crucifixion triptych. The hospital is now a museum, beautifully restored. Guided tours are available, and exhibitions tell the history of the building. It also houses the Model Wine Museum (see separate entry).
