The Wallfahrtskapelle St. Maria in Altötting is one of the earliest places of pilgrimage in Germany. Consisting of two parts – the Gnadenkapelle and the main chapel. The former dates from 750 AD and the latter from around 1494. There is also an ambulatory from 1517. The site is a place of pilgrimage because of the ‘Miraculous Statue’ of the Virgin Mary, which dates from 1330 and is on display along with the ‘Silver Prince’ statue. Many members of Germany’s ruling parties have been buried here, including King Ludwig II.
