St. Andreas church in Cologne was originally founded in 960 as a canon monastery by archbishop Bruno. It is a late Romanesque church with a large octagonal tower, and with Gothic elements inside (such as the chancel). Also inside are a number of paintings, sculptures and murals from the Middle Ages, as well as the Maccabeus shrine which houses the bones of the Maccabeus brothers and their mother, who were all martyred in the 2nd century BC for their faith. The shrine dates from 1527. The relics of St. Albert are also held in a sarcophagus in the west chapel.
