Seeon Abbey is located in the town of the same name, a short distance north of the shore of Chiemsee lake in Bavaria. The abbey was founded in 994 by Aribo I of Bavaria, and run by Benedictine monks. The main church building was reconstructed in a Romanesque style in the 11th century, and was replaced again in 1180 by the Gothic building we see today. The ideal location on a small island in the lake next to Seeon has always attracted visitors. Now, after its days of religious service have ended, it is open to tourists who can still see many of the original interior furnishings, sculptures and altars. The church is used for concerts and exhibitions also.
