In the centre of Dessau’s old town (Altstadt) is the Schlossplatz square. Here you will find a number of historic buildings worth seeing. The Rathaus, or Town Hall, is a smart building, as is the city library (Stadtbibliothek) to the north. The Gothic Marienkirche church here was left in ruins throughout the GDR period after damage in World War 2. It was rebuilt following reunification, and now its tower is open to the public allowing great views over Dessau. The old castle (Schloss) nearby is also a ruin.
