The Salvatorkirch in Duisburg is a large Gothic church in the centre of the town. It is one of the few remaining parts of the medieval city. It dates from 1415, however an earlier church stood on the site, and many restorations have taken place in later years – particularly after the roof was destroyed in World War 2. The famous geographer Gerhard Mercator, who pioneered methods of making maps flat, and who is responsible for the term ‘Atlas’, is buried in the church. He lived in Duisburg from 1552. Salvatorikirche is a Protestant church.
