The Rock of Wonders is part of Dessau and Wörlitz’s Garden Kingdom UNESCO World Heritage area. It was built between 1788 and 1794 for Prince Leopold III. It comprises an artificial island built to remind the Prince of his journey to Italy. He had tunnels and grottos built into it as a reminder of Mount Vesuvius. On this island is the classical Villa Hamilton at the foot of the fake volcano (which occasionally erupts for visitors). This is one of the most imaginative and fun sights in the area, and the villa itself one of the finest in Germany.
