Resistance Square, or Widerstandsplatz, in the centre of Dachau was the scene of the Dachau Uprising on 28 April 1945. In this historic event, citizens of the town and prisoners of the concentration camp fought in a battle against the SS soldiers for control of the town. Sadly many died in the battle, which took place the day before the US Army arrived. The square was originally a market place and is still used for that purpose today. It has tree-lined borders, and stalls will extend along Pharrstr. every Saturday morning. A plaque commememorates the victims in front of the bank.
