The Reichstag Building is the seat of the German parliament. It is located on Platz der Republik and was completed in 1894. After being all but destroyed in a devastating fire in 1933, the scene was set for the Nazi party to take power of Germany. The building was used for propaganda and military purposes, and later damaged further by air raids. Following the Cold War, the building was reconstructed from 1961-1964 but not used for parliamentary meetings. When Berlin became the German capital again in 1991, Norman Foster was commissioned to redesign and reconstruct the building. Since 1999 parliament once again meets in the building, and it is today one of the city’s top attractions. Visitors can climb to the dome of the building for free and look down into the main hall.
