The Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne is a museum for Ethnology and cultural legacy – particularly from Indo-China and Pre-Colombian America, Oceania, West Africa, the Pacific and Indonesia. The museum was built in 1901 specifically for the purpose of housing the collection of Wilhelm Joest, who had traveled much of the world. There are around 65,000 items on display, plus 100,000 historical photographs and 40,000 publications. Due to limited space, not all of the collection is on display. The North American Indian collections are a particular favourite with the children, whilst the Indonesian collection of wooden items is amongst the most important in Europe.
