Potsdamer Platz was once the busiest square in Europe but became ravaged by destruction and division during the Second World War, and subsequent Berlin Wall. For years Potsdamer Platz was an empty, scarred blot in the city. However, today it has been revitalised by much investment and rebuilding, and once again is the hub of the city. This time it is filled with shopping, theatres, casino, hotels and a film museum. The Sony Centre is a busy entertainment complex, set in the remains of the former Grandhotel Esplanade, where Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin once stayed. The Film Museum and Television Museum are also attractions, and the Ritz Hotel is a splendid place to stay.
