The Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg is a large house overlooking the bend in the River Main, and set amongst wonderful gardens. The house was built by King Ludwig I as a replica of a villa uncovered in Pompeii. He used it as a summer residence and packed it full of his antiques. It was damaged in World War 2, but later restored. The Pompejanum is now a museum of the king’s collections and the history of the house itself, incorporating the landscaped Mediterranean gardens.
