Nikolaiviertel is an area of twisting, narrow alleys crammed with bars, restaurants and shops, creating an atmosphere of medieval times in the centre of Berlin. The area was once the haunt of artists who lived or lodged there. However, during World War 2 much of the area was flattened by bombs. To the credit of the city planners, the reconstruction and rebuilding of the area was very harmonious in achieving the look and feel of the past. This area remains very popular today, with the oldest sight being the 13th century Nikolaikirche which houses an annex of the City Museum.
