The New National Gallery is just south of the Kulturforum in Berlin. It was opened in 1968, designed by Mies van der Rohe. The building is a large square glass structure with a steel roof. The purpose of the building was to house pieces of 19th and 20th century art, including some from the original National Gallery. The now very large collection of pieces covers paintings and sculptures of modern art. In 2004 a special exhibition of items from the New York Museum of Modern Art drew in 1.2 million visitors.
