The Ludwig Museum is one of Cologne’s oldest museums, housing works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Paul Klee, Wilhelm Leibl, and Jasper Johns. The museum was set up in 1976 originally to showcase local artists from the Gothic period, but now focuses heavily on works from the 20th century. A gift of 350 paintings from the Ludwig family – who had built up the largest collection of Pop-Art outside of the USA - founded much of the current exhibition, however.
