Gross St. Martin was originally Cologne’s main church, founded around 960 and situated in the centre of the old town. Its spire, surrounded by four turrets, was a city landmark until the larger Dom cathedral’s spires overtook in the 19th century. The church once served as a Benedictine monastery for monks from Ireland and Scotland. Inside you will see a Romanesque choir stall area, and in the crypt are the remains of a Roman storehouse.
