The Gendarmenmarkt is a beautiful square laid out in 1688 and a must for any visitor to the city. It’s name was altered many times, and its purpose changed through the years. Like most areas in Berlin was heavily bombed in World War 2, but later restored. In it you will find the French Cathedral and the German Cathedral, both dating from around 1701, and also the Konzerthaus which retains some of the original damaged structure from 1800 in a new building opened in 1984.
