Set on a small island in the Chiemsee lake in Bavaria is the Fraueninsel. This small abbey was founded in 766. It was run by a Benedictine order of nuns from the 9th century. In addition to the abbey, there is a small village on the island. Tours can be taken of the chapels, with the frescoes and preserved buildings, as well as the picturesque houses of the village. This has to be one of the prettiest locations in Germany, with the painted 19th century houses adding massively to the quaint appeal.
