Duisburg Zoo was opened in 1934 to house and exhibit various animals. Since 1951 it opened the first dolphinarium in continental Europe, as well as the ‘House of 1000 fish’. Visitors today enjoy the dolphins in the various shows put on several times per day in huge tanks of sea water. There is also a popular monkey house, and a petting zoo for the children. Koala bears are successfully bred in the zoo, and visitors can also wander round the Chinese Garden.
