Between the Dom and the Fish Markets is Cologne’s Town Hall, or Rathaus. It is an impressive 16th century building of Renaissance architecture set amongst many pleasant, old buildings. There has been a town hall on this spot since 1135, making it Germany’s oldest. The current building was sadly bombed heavily in World War 2. It was rebuilt in stages from the 1950s, starting with the ornamental tower. The last of the final façade sculptures were finished in 1995. In the glass pyramid in front of the building is a preserved Jewish bath as a reminder that this was once the Jewish district.
