Cologne Cathdedral (Kölner Dom to the locals) is one of the best known structures in Germany, and an icon of the city of Cologne. It has the largest façade of any church, and is the second-tallest Gothic structure in the world. Although under the administration of the Roman Catholic church, it is self-governing. The structure was completed in 1880, however the construction period had lasted 600 years, starting in 1248. The building is 144 metres long, and the two towers on the west face rise 157 metres – once making it the tallest building in the world. The bones of the Three Wise men are thought to be held in the Sarcophagus of the Magi inside the cathedral. 14 bombs badly damaged the building in World War 2, and in 1996 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Tours are available, but not during Mass.
