Cochem is a small town on the banks of the River Mosel. Overlooking the town from its high vantage point is the castle, or Burg. It was built in the 11th century, but suffered under attack by French soldiers who completely destroyed the building in 1689. In the 19th century it was rebuilt in its current Renaissance and Baroque form. Inside it is full of furnishings collected by the owner family. In 1978 it was opened to the public for guided tours of the interior and grounds. There are great views over the Mosel Valley.
