The City Gallery in Altena is located in Köster Emden, a house built in 1707 in the old part of town. This house became the possession of various families, through the years – one of which widened the roof to stop snow falling on the horses below. The last owner, Paul Köster, who took on the name Köster Emden after survivors of the cruiser Emden, which sank. In 1975 the house became the ownership of the town, which gave it to the public as the City Gallery. Today works of contemporary art by local and international artists are on display throughout the year.
