The main attraction and dominant feature of the town of Burghausen is its castle which overlooks the town and the river from its position on a hill. The castle was first built from 1253, however much of the late Gothic structure you can see today was built later by King George the Rich. The castle is open to the public as a museum. In the residential part of the building, there are many period rooms, decorated with 15th century art, as well as the Chapel of St. Elizabeth and 13th century ballroom. In the castle part of the building, you will find the main tower and other quarters.
