Burg Hohenurach is a ruined castle on a hilltop close to the spa town of Bad Urach, and 40km from Stuttgart. It was built as a feudal castle between 1030 and 1050 for the Counts von Urach. It was extended under the ownership of Count Ludwig I von Württemberg in 1428. It later became a residence to Ludwig when Württemberg was split in 1442. During the Thirty Years’ War in 1635, the castle was sieged for eight months, and it became damaged. It was further damaged when lightning struck a gunpowder store in 1767, and subsequently left ruinous. Visitors today can freely wander around the ruins, admiring the views.
