Berlin Zoo was opened in 1955 as the “animal park” in the grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace. Today it is a 160 hectare site renowned for its spacious enclosures and rare species – particularly its collection of hoofed animals. Visitors can also see various types of wild cat, giant flying foxes, tropical plant and bird species, the Hummingbird and Crocodile House. The zoo also houses the largest collection of poisonous snakes in Europe. The brown bear enclosure can be seen from the street for those not wishing to enter.
