Elector Carl Theodor commissioned the impressive palace and park grounds in Benrath in the mid-18th century. It was built by architect and landscape gardener Nicholas de Pigage, and features a very harmonious setting between the gardens, lake and Rococo palace. The building – formerly a residence – contains 80 rooms. Guided tours are available through the day, which take in the reception rooms, private apartments, and gardens. There are also various exhibitions of museum pieces, and events, held throughout the year – check the website for details. Benrath is easily reachable from the centre of Dusseldorf.
