Bebelplatz is a famous square in Berlin, situated on Unter der Linden. It is surrounded by important buildings and is a popular tourist attraction in the city. The square dates from 1740, but was named after German Social Democrat August Bebel in 1947. Bebelplatz was the place where in 1933 the Nazi party staged a book burning – an event which has been commemorated by a library of empty shelves set underground, which can be seen through a glass window in the floor of the square.
