Bad Bergzabern’s castle was built in the 12th to 13th centuries by the counts of Saarbrücken. It changed hands numerous times, and was even destroyed in 1525. Later built up again in its current form by Ludwig I of Pfalz Zweibrücken, it takes advantage of the waterside position. Again it was damaged by fire, after French troops attacked, in 1625. The castle became property of the town in 1803, and was extensively restored in the 1900s. Today it is the seat of the local council.
