The central Markt, or Market Square, in Arnstadt, is where you’ll find a few interesting historic buildings. The most notable is the Rathaus, or Town Hall. This Renaissance building imitates Dutch architecture and looks a little out of place in this part of Germany. It is still the administrative building for the town and not open to the public. Opposite, the Neue Kirche is where Bach played as organist from 1703. It is often referred to as the Bachkirche. Around the market are various shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It is a lovely area.
